Dental health offices often see patients who may be engaged in exploitive circumstances and yet not realize that injuries to teeth, neck, and/or shoulders, coupled with dynamics observed during the patient visit are telling signs. What signs of concern do you see? What is your assessment of how the dental assistant handles the patient visit? What would you do differently?
Not all occupational injuries can be attributed to safety violations. What are ways to support patients to reveal more details about employment environments and conditions, what else is at play? What concerns do you see? What stage of change do you think the patient is in and what behaviors from the medical provider would be considered disruptive or supportive? What might you do in response to the patient’s final actions during the exam?
